We are seeking a full-time Substation Engineer 2 focused on Physical design of high-voltage substations. This role is open to qualified Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineers who are passionate about designing layout and construction-level deliverables related to site planning, structural foundations, steel, conduit, grounding, and equipment arrangements.
You’ll join a collaborative team that supports both greenfield and brownfield utility substation projects. As an Engineer 2, you’ll be hands-on in drawing development, material selection, and calculations, while working closely with senior engineers and designers. This role is ideal for someone looking to grow into a technical expert or future team lead.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Design and modify substation physical drawings including:
- General arrangements, equipment layouts, grounding plans, conduit plans, foundation plans, and bill of materials
- Prepare engineering and construction documents for new and modified substations (34.5–500kV)
- Create and apply technical specifications for structures, foundations, duct banks, and steel assemblies
- Perform basic engineering calculations such as voltage drop, conduit sizing, and foundation loads
- Coordinate with internal P&C, civil, and drafting teams to produce complete substation packages
- Apply field markups and support redline/as-built updates
- Support construction and field services through occasional site visits and walkdowns
- Travel up to 25% as required based on project needs
- Contribute to other duties or cross-functional tasks as needed
Knowledge & Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering
- Minimum 2 years of experience in substation or related utility/industrial design (or 1 year with a master’s degree)
- FE exam passed or in progress
- Familiarity with codes and standards such as NESC, NEC, IEEE, AISC, and ACI is preferred
- Proficient in Excel; experience with AutoCAD or Civil 3D is a plus
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel out-of-state as needed
